ABSTRACT

Formaldehyde is a chemical compound in the form of colorless, volatile gas, specific odor, and irritative. Formaldehyde is used in nail polish preparation intended as preservatives and as membranes to form resins that are useful for increasing adhesion. According to the Regulation of the Head of the BPOM number HK 03.1.28.11.07517 in 2011, formaldehyde was used in nail polish formulations with a maximum content requirement of 5%. Therefore, formaldehyde analysis was carried out on nail polish preparations circulated in Bekasi City. The research was conducted qualitatively using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and quantitatively using spectrophotometry UV-Vis method in 3 registered samples and 3 unregistered samples taken randomly with various brands. Qualitative testing of formaldehyde was carried out by TLC using the best eluent ethyl acetate: acetic acid: methanol (5:2:3). Formaldehyde content was carried out by spectrophotometry UV-Vis at wavelength 554 nm. The results showed that from the qualitative test 6 samples of nail polish were positively containing formaldehyde. Formaldehyde content in six samples are 0,0042% (R1), 0,0021% (R2), 0,0007% (R3), 0,0014% (TR1), 0,0006% (TR2), 0,0013 % (TR3). The result of this research it is known that there are no nail polishes circulated in Bekasi City that exceeds the requirements of formaldehyde content by the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM).
