Formulation and Evaluation of Guava Leaf (Psidium guajava L.) Ethanolic Extract Lotion as Antioxidant

Abstract

Lotions are liquid preparations in the form of suspensions or dispersions, used as topical preparation. In lotion formulations, emulgators are very important to maintain dosage stability. Surfactants that are often used as emulgators are anionic and non-ionic surfactants. The choice of emulgator type in preparation formulation needs to be considered in order to obtain a stable emulsion. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in the type of emulgator on the quality, stability and antioxidant activity of guava leaf thick extract lotion preparation (Psidium guajava L). The lotion preparation was evaluated for physical quality including organoleptical test, emulsion type, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity and cycling test and antioxidant activity test with DPPH method. The results showed that the lotion of thick extract of guava leaves (Psidium guajava L) with anionic and non-ionic emulgators had good quality and met the criteria. The difference in emulgator types of the two formulas resulted in differences in physical and chemical properties, namely anionic formula pH ranged from 6.63-6.87, spreadability 6.4-7 cm, adhesiveness ranged from 4.15-4.69 seconds, viscosity ranged from 5925-10584 cp and non-ionic formula pH ranged from 5.13-6.17, spreadability ranged from 5-7 cm, adhesiveness ranged from 2.18-15.53 seconds and viscosity ranged from 2215-19277 cp. Thickened guava leaf extract lotion (Psidium guajava L) with anionic emulgators and with non-ionic emulgators is stable during accelerated stability test. And the thick lotion of guava leaf extract (Psidium guajava L.) with anionic and non-ionic emulgators has moderate antioxidant activity. The difference in emulgator types of the two formulas resulted in differences in IC50 values, which were 147 ppm and 104 ppm.
